About
Mathematics plays an important role in tackling challenges in Health and Biological Sciences. In recent years, its connection with Biology has grown, with more advanced models being used in areas like ecological systems, climate change, emerging diseases, and cancer. In healthcare, Mathematics supports key tasks such as hospital logistics, scheduling, resources management, and analysis of medical data—all of which help improve the quality and efficiency of health services. The range of problems and the need for timely, reliable answers make thoughtful and well-developed mathematical approaches essential.
NOVA Math’s Thematic Line Mathematics for Health and Biological Sciences (MatHBioS) provides a natural forum for fostering this interdisciplinary interaction. It brings together colleagues from different research groups, within and outside NOVA, promoting collaborations between mathematicians, biologists, health professionals, and decision-makers. In addition, MatHBioS complements NOVAHealth, a multidisciplinary platform created by NOVA University, with the mission of becoming a knowledge hub in different areas of health, resulting from the collaboration between NOVA’s schools, their perimeter institutions, as well as the health sector at large.
