The next edition of the NOVA Distinguished Lecture Series in Mathematics will host Professor Afonso Bandeira talk about “Detecting communities in networks, spontaneous synchronization, and pendulum clocks”, on April 3rd 2024, 2:30pm, Auditório 1B – Ed. VII.
 
Professor Afonso Bandeira research interests include Mathematical Statistics, Theoretical Computer Science, Combinatorics, and Optimization. He received his PhD in 2015 from Princeton University and currently is Professor with the Department of Mathematics at the ETH Zurich. He is also member of the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems, the ETH foundations of Data Science and ETH AI center and Director of the Institute For Operations Research (IFOR). 
 
NOVA Distinguished Lecture Series in Mathematics is a joint initiative of NOVA Math and the Department of Mathematics of NOVA School of Science and Technology (SST), that brings together outstanding researchers and the NOVA SST community, aiming to broaden students’ mathematical education, present new challenges, and spark their scientific curiosity regarding research in Mathematics.
