Abstract: The aim of this project is to develop new techniques for studying combinatorial properties and decision problems in semigroups, and to apply the insights thus gained to related topics in algebra, combinatorics, and algebraic geometry. The two parts — decision problems and combinatorial properties — are related by a number of interconnecting themes, in particular topics arising from the fascinating and beautiful combinatorial and algebraic properties of the plactic monoid.
